  1. MEMORY

    Loud cries, mumbled noises
    Neighborhood people, political bribers

    A few white faces
    scattered
    in a predominantly black crowd

And then another young man's eyes
    intensely, singing,
    holding a lamb.

    From where I stand
    I
    Drowning in his own tears

    Hot, drippy
    long false faces
    masks of death.
    Helmets advance
    choking fumes,
    explosions,
    screams,
    terror.
    Can't breath,.
    Blindly running.

The damp Mississippi air closes in its
    strangely dark Tension.

The day went on and on so slow
    People waving paper fans
    a black funeral home
    segregated with black mothers
    and white mothers
    Standing silent.

    White Breaths engulfs
    A crowd of dark shadows.

Day after day we filled the streets
    Our feet were tired,
but thousands of children kept the beat
    Marching strong
    inviting tenant farmers
    bus boycotts,
    freedom rides,
    lunch counter sit-ins

This was the date the world would cried
This is the date we we’ll never forget
